She wanted to give him a slap, a dirty one at that. On a second thought, she thought she might just double that and make it two dirty slaps. They would be dished with pain and served with tears, her tears. She would tell him how he had crushed her soul. How he had left her dreams shattered, how she had drained and lost herself all in the bid of loving him. She would tell him how that singular action had turned her into a broken spirit, a bitter woman and a vindictive lover.
He had turned her into a bitter woman, her heart was now half stone and half human, she wished she had turned her back on that burning desire to have him as hers, wished she had left him long ago when she realised that he was after her for her voluptuous size. This was very much obvious when he had warned her not to lose any more weight, forgetting to ask why she was shrinking, neglecting to see the fact that she shrunk from the weight of the realisation of the fact that she had wasted her time loving him. She once longed for his sweet embrace and caress but now that voice brought sadness and misery to her, his touch more like thorns, bruising her not only physically but emotionally. She had to hurry and leave him as she could feel the holes getting larger and the need to heal. If only wishes were horses………………………….
This story is inspired by this song by a Nigerian artiste called Waje…….. Please watch her soulful live performance below…….
I am from a Country of great resources and potentials with the appearance of having a stunted growth. I am from a Country that has witnessed oppression in all forms and nature. I am from a Country of great men and women believing in change while suffering and smiling. Always saying “E go beta” meaning “Things will get better”.
I am from a Country where men in politics and corridors of power are the same names I have heard since I was a kid. Clinging on to power and the Nation’s resources publicly and shamelessly.
I am from the once called “Giant of Africa”, where some people elect statesmen based on the meaning of their names and others contest for and win same positions repeatedly on account of their encounters with “angels”.
I am from a Country where the people are resilient, making names of themselves, through hard work and decent living, a Country with people of great honour and pride, dignity and integrity. A Country that inspires, makes you appreciate the joy of living, where people laugh and dance regardless of how fat or slim their wallets maybe. The People of my Country consist of great people, some of them maintaining their sanity while others have longed compromised.
This Country inspires me, this Country strengthens me, my Country gives me hope. Hope for tomorrow, hope for today, I am ……………………………………….. and you are?
*This is inspired by a song called “Bastard”. *********Explicit Lyrics********It is a song I heard over the radio in Lagos and I just can’t get it out of my head. It is a reflection of the situation at home. The artistes are Ikon, BlackMagic and a mysterious third wise man…….. Please enjoy the lyrical video….. 🙂 🙂

Brilliantly written by Jhumpa Lahiri, a Pulitzer winning author in 2004 and the movie adaptation was by extremely talented Mira Nair. Both whom I consider masters of their art.
I have since purchased the DVD and watched it 10045 times, the number which I have come to not by counting but by mere love for the movie! This movie celebrates family, love and the meaning of these words across generations and culture. With captivating performances, Irfan Khan and Tabu, who played the roles of the parents displayed and conveyed emotions that I can relate to, having aunties and uncles that have left their home countries and built a family for themselves here in America and in other parts of the world. I can also relate to their children’s behaviour, having cousins that do not understand the need to kneel down to greet their elders amongst other cultural norms.
During this season of celebrating love, family and life, please grab yourself a copy of the DVD or book and relax with a cup of hot chocolate or wine, whichever your choice and share this experience with me.
